Here’s what we have in our calendar for June:

  • WordPress Community Workshop – Thurs. 14th June, 6:30pm at CitizenM’s Glasgow, ground floor lounge
    Our very popular and relaxed get-together where we help each other get better at WordPress. We all sit around the big table and talk about the WordPress projects or conundrums we are working on at the moment. Bring your laptop or tablet, as well as questions and answers for your co-members.
  • How non-developers can contribute to WordPress, by Jenny Wong – Wed. 27th June, 6:00pm at iCafe Merchant City
    Please note that, due to a date conflict with the JPMorgan Meetup Collider, this event will take place on a Wednesday 27th June rather than our usual 4th Tuesday.
    Also, due to the devastating fire at the Glasgow School of Art nearly two weeks ago, our usual venue remains closed and the meetup will take place instead at the iCafe Merchant City, 70-72 Ingram St, Glasgow G1 1EX
    WordPress is nothing without the numerous amounts of contributions that have made it into the CMS that it is today. When someone tells you that anyone can contribute to WordPress you may not believe them.
    In this talk Jenny will discuss how every contribution counts, and explain the different ways non-developers can start contributing back to the open source project we all love so much.

Here’s what we did in April 2018:

  • WordPress Community Workshop – Gutenberg Special – Thurs. 12th April, 6:30pm at CitizenM’s Glasgow
    Gutenberg is the new WordPress editor, to be released sometime in April. It will mean a big change to the way we write posts and pages and, in a future release, it is expected to make page builders redundant. We aim to help you, as a WordPress user and content author, learn the ins and outs of the new editor before it comes out.
  • Find Content Ideas Relevant to Your Audience, by Ahmed Khalifa – Tues. 24th April, 6:00pm at iCafe Sauchiehall St.
    When it comes to creating content, the hard part is 1) coming up with ideas, and 2) it’s something that your audience is searching for and looking for on Google. And since the old boring cliché of “content is king” is always around us, it feels like you are under pressure to do your content justice by maintaining its high-quality and consistency.

This month at the WordPress Essex Meetup we’re having a GDPR themed night. With the imminent implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) almost every development agency, design studio, freelancer and website owner will be impacted by the changes to the law enforced from 25 May 2018.

Open GDPR Workshop

This will be an opportunity as a collective to raise questions, get to grips with the potential impact, understand how we can ensure our sites are compliant and generally develop a deeper understanding of GDPR. We’ll also look at some of the plugin options to help manage data. If you’re willing to share your own websites, we can also use these as case studies during the evening.

Presented by Dan Maby. Dan is a Director at Blue 37 a creative digital agency. He thrives on business development & project management, as well as having a passion for productivity & marketing. When not in front of a screen, you’ll find him organising events. Follow him @danmaby.

This month we’ll be learning some of the challenges of adding cloud services to WordPress, we’ll also be hearing about the 2018 Rugby 6 Nations Match Centre developed on WordPress and scaled for millions of concurrent users.

The Joys and Hardships of Adding Cloud Services to WordPress

In this talk Nic will step through both the product and engineering challenges of tightly integrating a complex cloud services product with WordPress. At Bibblio we provide advanced machine-learning recommendations to a wide sector of the publishing industry. Surely this should include WordPress, the biggest publishing platform on The Internet. But how does one provide a clean experience that feels like WordPress when the vast majority of the heavy lifting is happening off-site on our API? What kind of UX challenges arise from a workflow complicated by distributed systems?

Presented by Nic Young. Nic is Head of Product at Bibblio, where he focuses on product development and algorithm implementations. He has over ten years experience as a software developer and has worked in a number of programming languages across a variety of industries, mostly at startups.

NatWest 6 Nations Match Centre on WordPress

Following on from our work with the British & Irish Lions tour of 2017, Sotic were engaged to use WordPress as an enabling tool to deliver a new live match centre experience for the NatWest 6 Nations of 2018.

The system brings together live statistics, live blogging, digital asset management and video in one live experience meeting on demand high spikes of traffic in a multi-lingual environment.

Presented by Dan Drave. Dan joined Sotic in 2016 and leads the front-end development team, who deliver our fantastic websites. He has lived and breathed web development all of his professional career. Since working at Sotic, Dan and his team have delivered sites for a wide variety of our clients from Aberdeen FC to Six Nations and London Scottish to the Lions Rugby Tour of New Zealand. He actively contributes to the WordPress community and has recently spoken at exclusive WordPress events. Follow him @danieldrave.

We’re back from the winter break and will be holding another informal meetup for WordPress developers, designers, users and business owners in Essex.

Digital Trends – A study of Gen Z and how the web must adapt to their needs.

Presented by Jamie Lawrence, Elevate Account Manager at WP Engine. The WordPress digital experience platform

The major update coming to WordPress this year: Gutenberg

The WordPress editing interface has mostly stayed the same for many years, but that’s about to change. Later this year, a major update is coming to WordPress, called Gutenberg, which will revolutionise how you publish content on your website. It’s currently planned to launch with WordPress 5.0.

Soon, you’ll be able to create fancy page layouts and use a variety of new formatting options, simply by drag-and-dropping blocks into your page. No longer will you have to mess around with shortcodes, or have to install a page builder plugin. It’s also stirring a lot of debate in the WordPress community, for example many themes and plugins will need updating to work with Gutenberg, and users may need retraining.

Mike, from Primary Image, will lead a demo of the new WordPress editing interface, plus we’ll discuss some of the steps that webmasters will need to take.

Test quick, Build smart, Be awesome

A lot of the time businesses are so focused on the big shiny thing at the end of a roadmap that nobody ever stops to question, is this the right thing? Is this something users want? Will this actually move the needle for the business?

In this talk, Adam goes over failures, successes, and general lessons learned over his career to date in publishing about testing hypotheses, engaging with users and bringing stakeholders along the journey. The technical restrictions and expectations that can come from that, and pitfalls to avoid will be discussed.

Presented by Adam Flint. Adam is the Senior Product Manager at Business of Fashion. He’s proud to be owning the content stream of the most influential and informative business fashion site on the web!

Use Accessibility Tools

A look at a selection of some useful free tools that help ensure accessibility of websites. The tools are browser extensions and WordPress plugins. Many are designed for testing for certain aspects of accessibility, but some can actually improve the accessibility of WordPress (and other) websites

The session will contain many live demos to illustrate how the tools can be used.

Presented by Graham Armfield. Graham is a Web Accessibility Consultant for his own company Coolfields Consulting. He work with organisations to help them improve the accessibility of their websites – testing the websites for accessibility, and advising the designers and developers on how to fix issues found. He has also written detailed training courses on accessibility for developers which he presents on a regular basis.

He’s also a WordPress developer, and I’ve built many accessible WordPress websites for clients. Follow him @coolfields.

How Blockchain is going to disrupt Digital Marketing

David will take a look at how blockchain is starting to disrupt the digital marketing sector and show specific examples and trends. How will cryptocurrency change advertising? What can we learn about acquisition from ICOs? How does changing the fundamental economies of digital change the way people and organisations behave online?

Presented by David Lockie. David is the Founder and Director of Pragmatic which he set up in January 2012 after freelancing as a WordPress Developer for a number of years. David loves delivering websites that add value to businesses and organisations and has been invited to speak at international conferences WordCamp and WooConf, sharing his insights on becoming a successful WordPress freelancer and revealing how WordPress can save the world. The first WordPress London Meetup for 2018. We’ll be looking ahead at what changes 2018 will bring to #wpldn, we’ll also be looking at getting production-ready.

Production-ready WordPress: Deploy your code using version control and continuous integration

It is common practice to move code through a series of servers in a multi-tiered development workflow. This talk will discuss best practices for deployment from local development environment to production servers. We’ll dive in to in how to push changes from collaborative version control tools to build, deploy and deliver WordPress. Learn basic concepts around deployment, testing and dependency management and see how it all ties together.

Presented by Edmund Turbin. Edmund is Senior Solutions Engineer at WP Engine, London. Over the past ten years he has built websites with content management systems and has held technical roles in media, publishing and ad tech in New York City. Edmund is passionate about front end coding, development workflow and architecting scalable WordPress solutions for enterprise. Edmund has recently achieved certification as an AWS Solutions Architect – Associate.
