So I wanted to organize my media files (primarily audio) in an arbitrary folder structure, and from those folders, put the files into playlists inside my posts. I wanted all these files to be part of the Media Library, i.e. registered in it. In addition to that, I wanted to use a CDN for all the media files. This case was satisfied by X4 Media Library + W3 Total Cache. No other free folders plugin, or combination of plugins, had the folder functionality I needed. Even in paid versions. Yes X4 is buggy and kind of half baked but it's free, as of yet.

There is a serious bug, all images are duplicated in the folder view. In addition, you can not view the video mp4 file (in the regular library it can be viewed) And no support of many important file formats in the free version

This plugin is best from free plugins but it need to 1. sync files uploaded from FTP 2. remember last used folder

Amazing interface and really easy to use. However, would be really awesome if files uploaded by FTP showed up... It seems to be only one way compatible, files uploaded through WordPress show up in FTP but files uploaded in FTP do not show up in WordPress. I hope this feature is added one day!
